The bit of extra hair on your legs may help you to stay warm, saving on heating bills!
But seriously. Just because you may not be shaving, doesn't mean winter doesn't come with its share of body hair issues. Heavy clothing may block follicles, leading to ingrown hairs and skin problems. Make sure you wear clean clothes to avoid infections, and take a minute to exfoliate with a loofa or a gentle exfoliating body wash in the shower. It will leave your skin clear and healthy. If you exfoliate regularly, you will also be less prone to skin irritation once your body acclimates to the razor once more at the beginning of spring!

Also keep in mind, electric razors make excellent stocking stuffers for guys. An electric razor is a great way to quickly remove facial hair for men who don't have super heavy beard growth.

Ingrown Hair Question

Q: Every time I shave, I get pimple-like bumps along the tops of my thighs and calves. Is this razor burn? I've tried switching shaving gels, but nothing seems to help. What can I do?

A: What you are experiencing is probably ingrown hair. This happens when the new growing hair becomes trapped under the surface of the skin after shaving.
Gently exfoliating your skin with a loofa or washcloth in the shower may release the trapped hairs, but be gentle or you may irritate the skin further. As always, be careful when you shave, and make sure your skin and razor are clean. Shaving a little less closely may sacrifice some smoothness, but save your skin in the long run. If the hair isn't shaved quite so short, it may be less likely to get stuck underneath the skin.
Waxing, sugaring, or epilating your legs may reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs to begin with, because the hair is removed outright instead of lopped off at the surface of the skin, and has a more natural regrowth pattern.
Good luck, smooth healthy skin is right around the corner!

Transgender Hair Removal

Transsexuals, transgenders, crossdressers and transvestites are all faced with unique hair removal issues. Beard hair can pose a problem when even shaving leaves stubble and shadow. Waxing and threading are not recommended for thick facial hair removal, and depilatory cream can easily burn delicate facial skin. This leaves two main options for stubborn facial hair.

Electrolysis for Transsexuals
Electrolysis is heralded as the primary method for permanent facial hair removal. After electrolysis is complete there is no hair regrowth, and no shadow or stubble. However, electrolysis does take a long time. How long does facial hair electrolysis take for a transsexual woman? 1 to 4 years is the norm, with the average falling somewhere around 2 years. Electrolysis is also expensive. Expect to pay around $70 an hour, with one 30 minute to 2 hour session a week in the initial months. Toward the end of treatment the sessions will be less frequent, 1 or 2 a month to finish up the hair removal process. Electrolysis can cost anywhere from $25 to $150 per hour, depending on the practitioner.

Laser Hair Removal for Transsexuals
Laser hair removal is cheaper and less painful than electrolysis, and takes less time for significant results. Rather than treating the face hair by hair, a laser is used to "zap" multiple hairs at once. This makes the process quicker.
The drawback, however, is the fact that laser hair removal is less thorough and permanent than electrolysis. Because the process works by targeting the pigment in the air follicle, light or pale hairs may be missed. Some have suggested that laser offers permanent hair reduction, while electrolysis offers hair removal. For people with dark skin or pale hair, laser may not be worth it.

Combination
Another option, especially for women with dark hair and pale skin, may be initial laser treatments, with electrolysis follow up. The initial laser treatment thins out the bulk of their hair and should make things manageable with shaving and reduce stubble and shadow, while electrolysis targets the stragglers and leaves your skin as smooth as a cis-woman's.

Crossdresser and Transvestite Hair Removal
For male crossdressers, transvestites, and female impersonators, see my sections on male hair removal for some tips for other areas of the body.

Why Shave?

Why do people shave? The answer is a complex one.
Some people like the smoothness of hairless skin. Others find in areas like the armpit it helps you smell fresh and stay clean.
Also you can't deny that, especially for women, there is a large social imperative to shave. For many women it is simply not an option to leave hair under your arms or on your legs.

Some men shave their chests or legs because they find it more comfortable to be hairless. Also a hairless body shows muscle definition easier, making you appear fit. Some men shave or wax their backs because as for women, there is some cultural imperative to be hairless in that area. Some women also prefer a man with little or no body hair.
For men, shaving the face can be more comfortable, especially in warmer months. A beard can get itchy and sweaty in the summer. Waxing the face is not recommended for men.

But contrary to some people's experience, shaving does not have to be a tedious or painful process. With a quality razor, moisturizing shaving gel or cream, and plenty of hot water, shaving can actually be a relaxing and luxurious part of your day.
When done slowly and carefully, shaving actually exfoliates your skin- leaving it smoother and softer than before. And with a good shaving gel or cream and moisturizing lotion, your skin can only benefit.

Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis

There is some controversy currently about the best method for permanent hair removal. Which is the best method for you? Only you can say.

Compared to electrolysis, laser hair removal is quicker. It requires shorter sessions and has more noticeable results after fewer sessions. It is also comparably cheaper.
However, it is also less permanent. Since the amount of removal depends on the amount of pigment in the hair, not all hairs may be removed.
Also the hair may begin to regrow after a few years.

Electrolysis is permanent- however it is more painful, takes longer, and costs more. But what can you say, if you want the hair to be gone for good, this is your best option.

Some people use a combination of both methods- lasering the hair until it is mostly gone, and getting electrolysis on the remaining fuzz. This can be a good compromise of cost and time.

Male Chest Hair Removal

The chest is possibly the most common area for men to remove hair from.
Because it is a relatively flat and accessable area, many options are available when it comes to hair removal.

Waxing or sugaring are probably the best options overall, as they last the longest and leave the least stubble for the price.
You can get waxing done professionally, or do it yourself at home. This saves you work and helps you get a closer shave.

Next, take a hot shower. Not only will this soften and prepare the hair, but if your skin is clean you will have less irritation, ingrown hair, or razor burn.

Next select a good shaving cream or gel. This will lubricate your razor, reducing drag and friction on your skin and also reducing irritation. Spread it on in circular motions. Ideally, let it sit for a minute or two before starting.

Next, take a razor with a new, clean blade and begin shaving in gentle strokes. If this is your first time taking a razor to your crotch, you'd do well to only shave a portion of the hair this time. If you shave it all off the first time you'll likely face some nasty irritation, until your skin acclimates to the process. Leaving a generous 'landing strip' the first time can be a nice middle ground.

Also if you're a beginner it's recommended that you shave with the direction of hair growth. This will drastically cut down the irritation you may experience.
However, some people do shave against the grain. Some some with the grain, against it, and then with the grain again. Still, others just shave any old way until the hair is gone.
Find a method that works best for you, but be aware that the closer you shave, the more irritation you're risking.

Pubic Shaving Risks
Ingrown hairs are hairs that don't grow through the surface of the skin, but get trapped underneath. They can become infected and irritated like a pimple.

To prevent ingrown hair, wash your skin with a loofa, before and after you shave. However be careful not to irritate freshly shaven skin with aggresive scrubbing.

To treat ingrown hairs, you can go in after the hair itself with a pair of tweezers and free it from the skin.
However, with this you risk doing more harm then good - You might damage the skin and possibly cause scarring. Use your judgement and make sure your tweezers are clean and sterile.

Razor burn or razor bumps are the tiny red bumps that sometimes appear soon after shaving. They are caused by the razor cutting too close and shaving off the top layers of skin. In addition they can become even more irritated if your skin or razor wasn't clean, becoming itchy and painful.

Preventing razor burn has two steps. First, make sure you aren't shaving too close. This means shaving slowly and gently(no pressure on the blade,) and using shaving cream or gel. Shave with the grain, and don't make too many passes with the razor.

Second, protect your skin from contamination. This means showering beforhand, using a clean new razor blade, wearing only clean clothes after shaving, and avoid doing anything that will cause you to sweat.

Pubic Waxing
Brazilian waxing is another popular form of hair removal for the genital area.
However because of the risks involved it is seriously recommended that you find a professional to do it.
Incorrect waxing can cause deep tissue bruising, infection, tearing of muscle tissue and other serious risks.
Professional waxing is not that expensive($45-$60,) and a decent wax job will last you several weeks.

If getting it done professionally is not an option for you, we recommend you stick to shaving.

Other Methods
Other methods such as friction and threading have been used with varying degrees of success on the pubic area.
A word of caution though, depilatory creams contain harsh chemicals and should not come into contact with the genitals, for obvious reasons.
You risk serious chemical burns on very sensitive areas.
If you do get a chemical burn on the genital area, treat it with aloe or some bacitracin ointment such as Neosporin and keep it clean.
If it doesn't clear up in a few days or gets worse, it's time to see a doctor.

Arm Hair Removal

Women and men remove hair from their arms more often than you'd think. For this reason, waxing or sugaring are the recommended methods for temporary hair removal on the arms.
With waxing or sugaring regrowth will be finer, and will look less like stubble.

What's more, both these methods last longer than shaving.
You can have waxing or sugaring performed professionally for around $30-$50, you can by a home waxing/sugaring kit for around $30, or you can even make your own sugaring recipe at home for easy hair removal at almost no cost.

How to make your own Sugaring Recipe

As your arms are straight and relatively flat, they are a relatively simple area to remove hair from.
Waxing or sugaring your arms is like any other body part. Spread the solution on your skin with the direction of hair growth in a small patch.
Next, press the cloth strip on top and stroke it firmly a few times in the direction of hair growth.
Then grip one end of the fabric and pull it quickly back, towards the opposite end of the strip. You should always pull back, not up or forward.
With sugaring you can reuse the same strip until it looses its ability to grip hair.

Electrolysis and laser hair removal can also be plausible options for permanent hair reduction or removal.
If your hair is dark and your skin is light, laser may be for you. It works by targeting the melanin in your hair, heating it and subsequently 'disabling' the hair follicle.
Laser can be especially good for the arms, where hair reduction may be the desired outcome, rather than total hair removal.
However, laser treatment can be expensive, and can require multiple treatments for satisfactory hair reduction.
A good technique for finding a quality laser technician is to ask around for other people's experience with laser hair removal. It's important to find a skilled professional, as lots of money time, and comfort can be wasted.

However, if you do want as much permanent hair removal as is currently available, electrolysis is the way to go.
Electrolysis works by placing a hair-thin needle into the hair follicle, and electrifying it, zapping the root.
Hair by hair, this is generally the agreed upon method for permanent hair removal.
However it can be a long, uncomfortable process, with each hair treated individually. Also it can be very expensive, with treatments possibly continuing for a year or more for large areas.
If you want to undergo electrolysis, again it is important to find a skilled technician. Ask around, good practitioners will have good things said about them.

Also methods such as friction, threading, and depilatory creams can work well for the arms. Ultimately it's up to you and your preferences.

Male Facial Hair Removal

Most men have shaved their faces at some point in their lives. But how much thought does the average man put into it? Lots of guys have the unfortunate habit of quickly scraping a disposable razor across their faces in the morning and running out the door.
However, this can lead to problems such as cuts, razor burn, and ingrown hairs.

Guys, be kind to your faces. Buy a replaceable cartridge razor, or better yet get a classic double-edged safety razor, a badger hair shaving brush, and some glycerin based English shaving cream.
If you're resigned to a fate of irritation and burning skin with every shave, this method of shaving will be a godsend.

A good double-edged razor costs upwards of $26. Keep in mind this is a serious non-disposable razor, not a plastic drugstore razor. Shaving brushes are upwards of $8, and $25 for some of the best shaving cream on the market which will give you many uses. I guarantee you with these simple supplies, razor burn and painful irritated skin will be a thing of the past.

Once you have these supplies, here's how you use them.
After a nice hot shower, place your brush in the sink and let it fill with hot water. Keep your face as wet as possible with hot water throughout the entire process.
Next take your brush and hold it upside down until water stops pouring out of it, then swirl the tips of the brush in your tub of shaving cream until you have a nice layer of lather.
Brush this onto your face in an up and down circular motion, then set your brush on it's handle.
Take your razor and shave downwards with the direction of hair growth.
Keep in mind that a double-edged razor is a different beast from an old disposable razor, and you'll need to go much slowly and pay attention to what you're doing. That's OK, that's how it should be.
Once you're done rinse your face off using cool water, and rinse your brush off and shake it dry. Store your brush sitting on it's handle, not on it's side. This will let it dry properly and keep it in good condition.
Afterwards pat your face dry with a clean towel and finish with a soothing aftershave, nothing stingy and full of alcohol.

All that being said, there are other options for men looking to remove hair from their faces.
Electrolysis and laser both work, though they are costly and take many treatments.

Unfortunately most alternate forms of hair removal are not typically recommended for men.
Mainly there hasn't been much research into the area I think.

Female Facial Hair Removal

It seems to be a common assumption that only men have facial hair, and all women have smooth hairless skin on their faces. However this can safely be disproved as most women have a small to moderate amount of hair on their faces, ranging from soft fluff to stiff whiskers.
This is perfectly normal, in fact most women have it, and nothing to be ashamed of.

The most common methods for treating facial hair is plucking, though bleaching is another viable option and threading is rapidly gaining popularity. Some women also wax their faces.

A couple other options are electrolysis and laser. Laser is quicker and cheaper(though not inexpensive) but less thorough, electrolysis is more thorough, but takes longer and costs more.

There are also facial depilatory creams available, though depilatory creams designed for the body should not be used on the face.
A rotary epilator can generally be used on the face safely.

Friction is a method which should not be used on the face, as the skin is delicate and does not respond well.

Because the face generally offers a small area with typically fine hair, there are many methods available.

Leg Hair Removal

The legs are possibly the most common area to remove hair from, which shaving probably being the most popular method.
However, because the legs offer a relatively large flat surface, they are possibly one of the most versatile areas in terms of which method you use.

Specifically shaving, waxing, sugaring, depilatory creams, friction, rotary epilators, electric razors, and even laser are all good choices for this area.

Some other plausible though less popular methods would be electrolysis and plucking. However the time involved with both these methods makes them a less popular choice.

Threading is another choice, though it is usually performed on the face.

Some things to keep in mind when removing hair from your legs is that exfoliating regularly can be a great plus to most methods, if your skin is clean and free of excess dead skin cells not only is it easier to remove hair, but also you have much less risk of ingrown hairs, razor burn, and other irritations or infections.

Hair Removal Guide Link Exchange

If you're a webmaster with a website on the subject of health, beauty, hair removal etc. and would like to be featured as a link on our site, we would be glad to do a link exchange.

If you're interested, just paste a link to our site on your link page and contact us with the subject "Link Exchange" by clicking the image below. This exfoliation can be good for your skin, but if you shave too close your skin becomes exposed and sensitive, and more susceptible to irritation or even infection.
If you find your skin feeling sensitive and painful, here are some tips.

RAZOR BURN - PREVENTING

Use a fresh razor. A dirty razor is much more likely to introduce bacteria to your exposed skin, and subsequently causing irritation and infection.

If you are nicking yourself frequently, slow down or stop. This is a sign that you're shaving too close and are removing protective layers of skin.

Use a shaving cream or gel. Some people find one works better than the other for preventing razor burn, do some experimenting and find out which is best for you.

Avoid activities that will cause you to sweat immediately after shaving. The acidity and bacteria in your sweat can sting and irritate your skin.

Put on fresh clean clothes after shaving.

Shave slowly and carefully, without pressing down on the razor too much. You may even want to shave with the grain to avoid cutting too close.

Take a hot shower before shaving. If your skin is clean there is less chance of infection.

RAZOR BURN - TREATING

A cool shower can be soothing to irritated skin.

An antiseptic cream can treat infection.

There are aftershaves available designed for sensitive skin. They don't contain alcohol or any irritants, and can usually provide immediate relief from razor burn.

Make Your Own Sugaring Recipe

Sugaring is a hair removal method similar to waxing; the process is similar but the ingredients are different.
You can make your own sugaring solution at home. All you need is...

1 cup of white sugar

1/4 cup honey

The juice of 1/2 lemon

A drop or two of molasses if you have any on hand

To apply the mixture you will need...

Something to store the mixture in, a glass jar or used makeup container works well

Something to apply it such as a popsicle stick or tongue depressor

Strips of muslin cloth

Combine ingredients in a bowl and heat in microwave or on stove just until it bubbles and becomes smooth.
Let it set until cool before using, though a little warmer than body temperature is better for use.
Make sure your skin is clean and dry and clear of any oils or moisturizers. You can apply a bit of cornstarch to your skin to make sure it's nice and dry.
Next, using the tongue depressor apply a thin layer of sugaring solution to your desired area following the direction of hair growth.
Then take a strip of muslin cloth and press it into the solution, stroking it firmly two or three times in the direction of hair growth.
Grip the end of the fabric and pull it off quickly against the direction your hair grows. If you do it too slowly it will be more painful and it may not remove all the hair, leaving solution behind.
Repeat until hair free!

The solution lasts and can be stored a long time in an appropriate container. Refridgeration is neither required nor recommended. In fact, if you find the solution becomes cool and too thick, you can heat it in the microwave for 20 seconds, or untill it becomes smooth once more.

Male Body Hair Removal

Hair removal is becoming a hot topic for many men these days, times are changing and the world of caring about one's appearance and hygene is rapidly opening for people of all genders.

Men face most of the same issues as women with bodily hair removal. How much to remove, where to remove it from, what method to use, and how to avoid negative byproducts such as razor burn and ingrown hairs.

Chest

You can use most major hair removal methods on your chest, such as shaving, waxing, friction, and depilatory creams. When shaving be sure to use a fresh razor, shaving cream or gel, and be careful to avoid your nipples. Shaving your chest has the drawback that itchy stubble will appear fairly quickly.

Back

Removing hair from your back at home is difficult without assistance, for obvious reasons. Professional waxing is a recommended option. If you have an assistant and want to try shaving at home, make sure they don't press down too hard. You can also use friction or depilatory cream safetly here.

Pubic Area

After a hot shower use a shaving cream or gel designed for sensitive areas and shave with the direction of hair growth with a fresh, clean razor. As your skin becomes accustomed to shaving you can shave closer and closer. For the testicles hold the skin taut and shave gently.

Butt

You can get it professionally waxed, or shave at home. If shaving at home be very careful, use a sharp razor and a mirror. Squat in the tub to get in the crack. Depilatory creams can work on the cheeks but are not safe for the genital region.

Arms & Legs

Use shaving cream, and shave gently against the grain with a sharp razor. You can also try waxing or sugaring these areas yourself at home, or trying another method such as friction or depilatory cream.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is your best bet for permanent hair removal. In electrolysis a low electrical current is sent to the hair root via a hair-thin needle, effectively 'killing' the hair and root for good.
Because every hair must be treated one at a time, electrolysis takes a long time. Multiple treatments are required.
Electrolysis can be performed most anywhere on the body, including the eyebrows, face, legs, genitals, bikini area, and back. Though sometimes a physician's consultation is required for removing hair from areas such as moles.

ELECTROLYSIS - HOW TO DO IT
First of all, there are "home electrolysis" kits which are questionable and not recommended.
Professional electrolysis is highly likely to be more effective and less risky.
To find a reputable elecrologist, first of all look for one that is licensed or certified with the state, if your state requires it. Make sure the certificate is on display and current.
If your state does not require them be to certified, try to find one with a certificate from an accredited electrology school.
Most places will offer a free consultation, which is a good way to get an idea of their particular procedure. During this you can ask any questions you may have regarding cost, how much discomfort to expect, how many treatments you may need, etc.
Finally, make sure the place looks clean. Do they use disposable gloves and probes? Does the place look sterile like a doctor's office, or shady like a back ally tattoo parlor? Ask to meet the electrologist. Do they seem professional? Finding a place that you're comfortable with is important.

ELECTROLYSIS VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Compared to other hair removal methods electrolysis is rather costly and painstaking. However, it is your best bet for permanent hair removal. Laser hair removal is less painful, expensive, and time consuming, however the hair removal is not as extensive or permanent.
And unlike shaving, waxing, and other temporary methods, once treatment is over there is no further cost or upkeep.
Basically if you want to remove a small amount of hair from a problem area such as the upper lip or breasts, electrolysis is a good bet. However larger areas such as the legs or chest will be a much longer and costly process, and laser hair removal may be the more appropriate choice unless you are seriously devoted to electrolysis.

Permanent Pubic Hair Removal

According to searches, a lot of people seem to be interested in permanent pubic hair removal. Pubic hair removal really isn't too different from other hair removal-- if you want a permanent solution, your options are pretty limited.

Electrolysis is the use of an electrical current sent to the hair root via a needle, 'killing' it and stopping growth of the hair for good. It is not typically done at home and is a long occasionally painful process, one hair must be treated at a time. It takes multiple sessions over a long period of time, but is the most reliable choice for long-term hair removal.

Laser hair removal is the use of a laser which targets a pigment called melanin in the hair, and destroying it. It works best on people with fair skin and dark thick hair, as there is more melanin to target in the hair and less pigment in the skin to hinder the process. It is faster than electrolysis but less thorough, the levels of hair removal vary from person to person. It should be done by a professional and takes repeat treatments for acceptable results.

There are unfortunately some scams out there, claiming to provide permanent hair removal at home. Namely electric tweezers, herbal inhibitors, and dietary supplements claiming to provide permanent hair removal at home should be approached with skepticism at best. Remember, electrolysis and laser hair removal are the only methods proven to provide actual permanent hair removal.

Pubic Hair Removal

Lots of people remove their pubic hair, for lots of different reasons. Sometimes it's sexual, sometimes it's practical. There are benefits such as less odor and a better look under a bathing suit. Some simply like the way it looks. For others, it's just a fun way to be different.
Some people remove all the hair, others leave a small neatly groomed 'landing strip' or triangle, removing hair mostly from the lower parts.
Pubic hair removal can be accomplished through shaving and waxing, and even lasers and electrolysis for permanent pubic hair removal.

HOW TO SHAVE YOUR PUBIC AREA
If your pubic hair is long, over 1/3 inch, start by trimming it either with an electric razor or a pair of scissors. Trim it as close as is safely possible.
Then move on to a warm shower or bath with plenty of hot water. The warm water will prepare your hair for shaving, softening it and causing it to swell up out of the skin. Also making sure your skin is clean will cut down your chances of irritation and infection.
Next, using a fresh clean razor, begin shaving with the direction of hair growth in light gentle strokes. Especially if it is your first time, don't worry about shaving super close. As you continue to shave your body will become accustomed to it, and you will be able to shave closer without irritation. But for now, take it easy and remember to use minimal pressure as you go.

There is a substantial risk for razor burn when you shave your genitals, as the hair is very course and the skin is delicate. For this reason many people leave a triangle or strip of hair on the mons, which is the most sensitive part and most suseptable to irritation and razor burn, removing hair only from the lower parts. This is a practical solution, giving you the best of both worlds.

HOW TO WAX YOUR PUBIC AREA
Pubic waxing aka "brazilian waxing" is not recommended to be done at home. Waxing, if done incorrectly, can lead to deep tissue bruising, tearing of muscle tissue, skin fissures, destruction of connective tissue, and infection.
To find a place to get a brazilian wax, call around to your local upscale salons. Ask them if they do brazilian waxes, and if they do, ask to speak with the aesthetician who performs them. Ask her (they are usually female) whatever questions you may have- including the type of wax they use (if you are familiar with them, and have preference), her procedure (you may prefer a salon where they powder the skin beforehand), about the sanitation methods, etc. Sometimes they style your hair into a small "landing strip" by default, sometimes not. Ask her how long she has been doing brazilians, and where she was trained. That should help you in making an educated decision. If, once you get there, you do not feel comfortable, or if even after starting you find that something is not right, leave.
Expect to pay at least US$45 for a good brazilian wax, with $60 being more the norm for a good wax job.

ELECTRIC SHAVERS
There are also electric "intimate" or "pussy shavers" available for just the purpose of removing pubic hair. These are expensive, but very useful. They usually have small wire screens over the blades so you can not cut yourself, even if you were to try.
To use a personal shaver, first trim your pubic hair short with scissors or an electric trimmer.
Then, begin shaving in circular strokes. You may want to apply a little baby powder, as the area must be dry for the shaver to operate properly.
Because of the design of the shaver you don't have to worry about cutting yourself, even if you want to go further south and do your behind. Even though they are commonly referred to as pussy shavers, they also work for men on the testicles and male pubic area.

Hair Bleaching

Bleaching doesn't actually remove hair, but lightens it to make it lighter and less noticable.
Specially designed bleaches are available for the face, arms, and legs. Take care when using bleach to keep it away from your eyes, do not use it on your eyelashes. Never prepare with metal dishes or instruments, and do not combine mixture untill ready to use it.

HAIR BLEACHING - HOW TO DO IT
It's a good idea to perform a patch test before using bleach.
Wash and dry the area thoroughly. Prepare bleach according to packaged instructions.
Using provided applicator, apply bleach to desired area. Do not rub in, coat thickly like icing a cake. Make sure hair is covered completely.
As bleaching times vary from person to person, wait 10 minutes and wash off a small corner to see if hair is acceptably lightened. If it isn't, reapply some fresh bleach and wait 5 more minutes.
Afterwards, wash off bleach with cool clean water and pat dry. Wash off applicator and any other equipment, and throw away any extra bleach.

HAIR BLEACHING VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Bleaching is painless, and fairly cheap at $5 to $8 for one box of bleach. When you take into consideration that one application lasts 2 to 6 weeks that's pretty substantial.
However, since bleaching is not technically a form of hair removal it is not always practical. If your hair is thick, bleaching it may not make enough of a difference to be worth it.
Also if your hair is coarse bleaching will be a poor choice for you, as the chemical agents in bleach cause hair to become brittle and stand up.
Bleaching can be a good option particularly for the sensitive upper lip where plucking, threading and waxing are painful, and shaving isn't practicle for soft fine hair. For this reason it can be a good option if your hair is fine and you've had bad luck with other methods.

Shaving Tips

When I was younger, shaving my legs was a tedious, uncomfortable process that more often than not only ended up in irritated painful skin, and it seemed all too soon that stubble would show up and I'd have to repeat the whole process.
Little did I know that shaving your legs does not have to be that way. Shaving your legs can actually be a relaxing, pleasant part of your day - that is, if you do it right.

Shave after a hot shower. This is good for a couple reasons. First of all, if your skin is clean it will be less likely to become infected. Second, hair that is saturated in hot water is actually softer and easier to cut. Meaning less wear and tear on your razor, and a quicker, closer shave.

Use shaving cream. This will help keep the hair moist, provide lubrication for your razor, and also it will hold the hairs upright so they are more accessable to your razor. Soap can dry your skin or actually make your razor 'stick,' a good shaving cream designed for your specific area is preferable.

Use light, gentle strokes. My main mistake was putting too much pressure on my razor as I shaved. Not only is this completely unnecessery for a good shave, but it actually makes you more likely to develop ingrown hairs, razor burn, or cut yourself. When you shave you should actually be applying very little pressure. Let the sharpness of the blade do the work, not your arm.

Buy a decent razor. Replacable cartridge razors are preferable to disposables. If you do have to use a disposable razor, use a fresh sharp one. The duller it is, the more likely you are to cut yourself.

Shave in the evening. When you shave, it removes dead skin cells and a thin layer of the epidermis. This is good exfoliation, but it can leave your skin sensitive and exposed. Particularly you want to avoid swimming in the ocean soon after shaving your legs, as the salt can be quite painful to your skin.

Depilatory Chemical Burn

Chemical burn is a risk when using depilatory cream, specifically if you you have sensitive skin or leave the cream on your skin longer than intended. Also depilatory creams can occasionally burn even with no detectable cause! Be aware of the risk.
If your skin is sensitive and you burn frequently using depilatory creams, you should probably leave it on only a short amount of time, or discontinue use completely.
Needless to say, if your skin starts to burn and itch while the cream is applied you must wash it off immediately, or a burn will be probable.

CHEMICAL BURN - HOW TO AVOID
Avoid chemical burns by doing a patch test, and making sure to wash your skin immediately if you feel a burning and itching sensation.
Also if you use depilatory creams very frequently you will be at higher risk for chemical burns, as the protective top layer of skin is removed along with the hair.

CHEMICAL BURN - HOW TO TREAT
Treat a chemical burn like any other burn. That is, apply a cool compress, apply some aloe or bacitracin ointment such as Neosporin, and keep the area clean. Unless you are burned severely it should clear up in a couple days.

Laser Hair Removal

In this proccess a laser is used to "kill" the hair root.
It can be performed anywhere that hair grows, excluding the eye area. But it works best on people with dark coarse hair and light skin. It generally works poorly on blondes and redheads, African Americans, or people with dark tans.
Laser hair removal should only be performed by a licensed professional. It is semi-permanent, and multiple sessions usually produce the best results. The more sessions you have, the more long-term hair removal you will experience.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL - HOW TO DO IT
First of all, you want to find an experienced practitioner, preferably Board Certified in Dermatology. The atmosphere should be clean and professional. Check if any staff members are Registered Nurses, or Board Certified Doctors. Generally the more professional the place, the better. Make sure the practitioner is a lisenced professional, as this is not required in some states.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Laser hair removal is faster and cheaper than electrolysis, but less permanent. You will probably experience some hair regrowth in time. But it is longer lasting than either shaving or waxing, thought more expensive. Be prepared to pay upwards of $1000 for a series of laser treatments.
If you undergo laser hair removal you may experience skin redness and irritation, comparable to a bad sunburn. This is worse in some people and better in others. Blisters and burns may also occur, but are rare. Another rare side effect you may also experience is skin pigment change, which may last up to a month.

Friction

Friction is the use of a rough-surfice to buff away hair from the surface of your skin.
You can use anything from a pumice stone to a specifically designed hair removal mit.
Different products are available for different areas of the body, though the most common areas are the legs and arms as the skin is flat and fairly durable. However, specific firction products are available for areas such as the face and bikini area as well.
Lots of people like to use friction as an upkeep method between waxing sessions.

FRICTION - HOW TO DO IT
When doing the legs or arms it's a good idea to take a warm shower and exfoliate the area, otherwise you may have problems with dead skin sloughing off as you treat the area. A shower also helps to soften the hair, making your job easier.
Next, take your pumice or mit and rub it gently on the area using slow, circular movements. It is important to be very gentle. Remember you're not sanding splinters off a wooden board, you're treating your skin!
Your strokes should have only the slightest amount of pressure. It may feel like you're not doing anything, but if you check you will see the hair being buffed away.
Afterwards you may want to apply soothing lotion in case your skin becomes irritated, but it's a good idea to stay away from irritants such as heavily perfumed lotion for a day or so.

FRICTION VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Friction is fairly cheap, with the friction mits going for about $5.50, and $5.00 for pumice stones.
However it is short-term, if you use friction you'll probably see some hair regrowth by the next day. But it does not cause stubble like shaving, as the hair is rubbed away rather than sliced, so no sharp edge is formed on the hair.
It is mostly painless if done correctly, unless you have sensitive skin in which case you may not be able to rub the hair away without irritation. If this is the case you may want to find another method.

Electric Razors

Electric razors run the gamot from full-blown shavers you could shear a sheep with, to tiny battery-operated facial trimmers.
Electric razors are handheld devices with motorized blades which do the cutting for you.
They can come with many attachments for different lengths and areas.

ELECTRIC RAZORS - HOW TO USE
Electric razors are pretty straightforward. On dry skin, simply run the razor across the desired area. If needed you can apply a little baby powder to soak up any excess moisture and help it run smoothly. Unless your model is a particularly large one you shouldn't need to worry about cutting yourself.

ELECTRIC RAZORS VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Electric razors are extremely quick, 99.9% painless, and cost nothing after the initial purchase. However they do not give a very close shave. This may be a good thing if you are prone to razorburn or ingrown hairs, but if your hair is very dark you will probably be left with visible stubble.
Expect to spend $13-$25 for a tiny facial groomer, $60-$100 for an 'intimate' shaver, and $38-$160 for an electric beard shaver.

Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs are a risk for most types of hair removal.
Ingrown hairs are formed when the hair is removed, and the new hair begins to grow under the skin. Sometimes they become infected, irritated and painful, other times the hair is simply visible under the skin with no irritation present.

Ingrown hairs can be caused by shaving, waxing, sugaring, using an epilator, and plucking. Generally, the curlier your hair is, the more likely you'll be to get ingrown hairs.

INGROWN HAIRS - HOW TO PREVENT
As with anything, the best way to treat ingrown hairs is to prevent them in the first place. If ingrown hairs are a problem for you, try these tips!

Don't shave too closely. Shave with the direction of the hair rather than against it, and only use one or two strokes. If the hairs aren't cut too short they will be less likely to grow under the skin.

Soften up the hair. Take a warm bath or shower beforehand, and apply shaving cream a few minutes beforehand.

Don't shave too often. If you let your stubble grow out a bit longer between shaves, you'll have less irritation when you do.

Stick to single-blade razors rather than multiple. The extra blades cut hair extra short, which can mean extra irritation for you. A single blade razor will give a slower, but gentler shave.

Exfoliate. Use a loofah or bath puff on your skin while in the shower or tub. This will help slough off old skin, preventing hairs from being trapped beneath.(Do not exfoliate existing ingrown hairs, this will possibly irritate them further.)

INGROWN HAIRS - HOW TO TREAT
Once you have the little suckers, what do you do? Well, if you can see the hair beneath the skin, you can remove it. First, cover it with a warm damp washcloth for a minute or two to soften the skin. Then use a pair of clean sterilyzed tweezers to pluck it out. Needle tip tweezers work best.
However, if the hair is not visible beneath the skin you should not attempt to go in after it, as it may not be an ingrown hair at all. First put a warm compress on it for a few minutes to see if the hair surfaces.

Epilators

Epilators are small devices that pluck many hairs at a time, working like several pairs of tweezers. They are good for large areas like arms and legs, but can be difficult for sensitive areas such as the face and bikini area as the skin must be kept taut to avoid pinching.
It's important to invest in a quality epilator, as a cheap one is likely to hurt more. Some of the higher end models even include devices to dull the pain.

EPILATORS - HOW TO DO IT
You may want to take a warm bath or shower first to soften hairs and aid in the removal process.
To epilate, grasp the skin firmly and run the epilator across your skin.
Afterwards you may want to apply some lotion or a cool washcloth to sooth your skin if it becomes irritated.

EPILATORS VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Epilators are a practical substitute to shaving with a razor. It works on most of the same areas and lasts longer, three to eight weeks.
However there is more discomfort involved, though it will lessen with each session. Also it may not work if your hair is fine, or if your skin is sensitive.
Epilators run from $25-$70.

Threading

Threading is the use of a cotton thread rolled across the skin, which grasps even the finest hairs and removes them as it makes its way.
Threading is an ancient process, but is available in many salons today. It is usually done on facial hair such as the eyebrows and upper lip.
You should start experiencing fine regrowth in about three weeks. Not recommended for beard hair.

THREADING - HOW TO DO IT
Start with a piece of sewing thread about two feet in length.
Tie the ends together to form a loop.
Hook each ends of the loop around your thumb and forefinger.
Twist the thread about ten times. You should now have something which resemble a bow with hands at either end and the wound portion in the middle.
If you spread the fingers of one hand and close the fingers of the other hand slightly, the thread should twist and the wound portion should move back and forth.
To remove hair, place the thread across the area. Quickly open the fingers of one hand and close the fingers of the other. The wound portion should move from side to side, removing hair as it goes.
Practice on a friend, or your own leg until you become used to the process.

THREADING VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Threading is less painful than waxing or sugaring, as the top layer of skin is not removed. Afterwards you may experience a mild redness or puffiness for about an hour. However, as it's a less popular method you may have trouble finding someone who knows how to do it.

Waxing

Waxing is the use of a heated wax to remove hair, pulling it from the root. It is temporary, lasting from 3 to 8 weeks.
Many areas can be waxed. Typical types are leg wax, arm wax, bikini wax, or brazilian wax. However, some areas such as the genitals and nipples must be done professionally.
Waxing is not recommended for people who have varicose veins, diabetes, or poor circulation as they are at higher risk for infection.
Waxing should not be done on skin with pimples, warts, moles, sunburn or skin that is otherwise irritated.

WAXING - HOW TO DO IT
Professionally
Firstly, you'll want to find a reputable place. Call around to your local upscale salons. You really don't want them cutting corners when it comes to something like this. Ask whatever questions you may have, regarding sanitation, their procedure, etc. Ask how long they've been working and where they trained. This will help you make an educated decision.
As far as the process itself goes, if your hair is long it may be a good idea to trim it before your appointment to about 1/4 inch, or they may do it for you.
You will probably be instructed to expose the area to be waxed(legs, etc.) and lay on a special table. The esthetician will ask you if the wax is the right tempreture, etc. You may be asked to change positions a few times.
Afterwards she may likely apply some soothing lotion.

At home
If your hair is long, use a pair of scissors or an electric razor and trim it down to about 1/4 inch.
Heat wax according to directions. Using a popsicle stick apply a layer of wax to skin. Use included fabric strip(or use your own muslin cloth) and press on top of wax. Grip end of fabric and pull quickly back(towards the opposite end of fabric,) not up. Continue untill hair free!

WAXING VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Waxing ties with sugaring as the longest lasting hair removal method.
Prices for professional waxing range from $20-$200, depending on the area.
It is more painful than shaving or depilatory creams but lasts longer than either method, up to 4-6 weeks.
Unlike shaving where the stubble is rough and sharp, regrowth from waxing tends to be finer and softer.
It's debatable, but some claim waxing can actually decrease overall hair density when performed frequently for a long time.

Depilatory Cream

Depilatory cream is a chemical cream substance designed to literally melt hair.
It comes in different strengths, and sometimes with things like baby oil or cocoa butter added to benefit your skin.
Depilatory creams are typically best suited for the legs, underarms, and arms, though gentle formulas are available special for the face and bikini line.
Depilatory creams contain chemicals and should not come in contact with the lips/mouth, nipples, eyes, inner ear, nostrils, or genitals.

DEPILATORY CREAM - HOW TO DO IT
For legs, sit on the edge of the tub, for underarms stand over the sink.
Shake the bottle well, and pour some product into your hand. Spread it liberally over the desired area, but DO NOT RUB IN! This product is not designed to be rubbed in, and will give you some nasty irritation if you do. Spread it in a thick layer, like putting icing on a cake.
Leave it on for the directed amount of time (usually 5-15 minutes.) Then take a washcloth and remove the depilatory cream from a small area. If the hair doesn't go with it, wait a few more minutes. If it does, then you're done.
Don't use any product such as soap for a few hours afterwards, as this might irritate your skin.
If at any point your legs start to burn or feel painful, stop there and wash off the product to avoid a painful chemical burn.

DEPILATORY CREAM VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Depilatory creams are easy, fast, and if done right, painless. There is no chance of accidentally cutting yourself, and since the hair is not being pulled such as with waxing or sugaring, there is no pain there either.
Another advantage is the way the cream spreads on your skin, it can be easier to remove hair from areas like the underarms, ankles, and back of the knee where the skin is not flat and shaving with a razor may be difficult.
However if you leave the product on too long or have especially sensitive skin, you risk a painful chemical burn.
Depilatory creams are a little costly, but less so than sugaring or waxing. But most depilatory creams do have an unpleasant scent when in use, which is a drawback to some.

Sugaring

Sugaring is the use of a sticky sugar mixture spread on the skin, which clings to the hair. A strip of fabric is pressed on top and pulled off quickly, taking the hair with it.
Sugaring is similar to waxing in concept, but unlike waxing, the mixture does not typically require heating.
Several sugaring products are available commercially, or you can make your own mixture at home.
Sugaring works on your eyebrows, legs, underarms, bikini area, and pretty much anywhere hair grows.

SUGARING - HOW TO DO IT
Firstly, wash the area to be sugared. Use a soap free of moisturizer, as moisturizer will lessen the sticking ability of the mixture.
Dry the area well.
Next, spread a thin layer of sugaring mixture on the area, following the direction of hair growth. If sugaring your eyebrows use a thin layer and apply it carefully, paying attention to shape.
Next, place a strip of fabric over the area and rub it firmly a couple times, again following the hair growth.
Finally, holding your skin taut, grip the end of the fabric strip and quickly pull it off in one clean movement, going against the direction of hair growth. There will be some pain, especially on bigger areas of hair like the legs and arms, or sensitive places like the bikini area.
You can reuse the same strip several times, until it looses its ability to adhere.
After you're all done wash off any remaining sugaring mixture in warm water, and apply something soothing like moisturizer or a cool washcloth if you are experiencing lingering discomfort. Avoid using heavily perfumed lotions or anything that might irritate it further.

SUGARING VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Sugaring lasts longer than shaving, but is more painful than that or plucking. It offers a bit less control than plucking, but is quicker.
Commercial sugaring products can range up to $30 for 6oz of product, which admittedly isn't much if you use it on your legs. However, for small areas like eyebrows it should last some time.
Compared to waxing, it does not require heating and the same cloth strip with product may be used several times.
Another benefit to sugaring is that the ingredients are usually non-toxic and natural, so you don't come in contact with any harsh chemicals.
You can even make your own sugaring solution at home, from ingredients you may already have in your kitchen.

Plucking

Plucking is the use of tweezers to pull out hair, one by one, by the root. It is most common for the eyebrows and stray facial hairs.
A pair of tweezers is the only requirement, preferably a good pair over 3" long with a slanted tip for better control.

PLUCKING - HOW TO DO IT
First of all, assess your brows and the type of result you want. Don't fight your natural hair pattern, work with it. Accentuate the parts you like, downplay the parts you don't. Typically you should only pluck from the underside of your brow, aside from stray hairs which sometimes grow up the temples.
Once you have a rough idea of the shape you want, it's time to start plucking.
Grip the hair close to the base, and pull firmly with the grain. Do not quickly "yank" as this may snap the hair off, breaking it above the root. If you do it right it should be only mildly painful. Do not pull against the grain as this is very painful and not necessary.
It's best to go slow, plucking a couple hairs at a time and checking your progress frequently. Overplucking is unsightly, and if done frequently will damage the roots over time, causing your eyebrows to grow back more sparsely and slowly each time. The idea is to shape your brows to flatter your existing shape, not create a new shape altogether. Keep this in mind and you'll be on the right path to finding the best look for you.

PLUCKING VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Plucking is very cheap, and can be done by yourself at home, or wherever you may be! This is different than methods such as waxing, which is usually done professionally. However, plucking does require an eye for shapes. This doesn't matter as much when simply plucking a few stray hairs, but if you're looking to change things drastically and haven't got an eye for art, you may want to look into having it done professionally rather than wind up looking like Marilyn Manson(unless that's what you're going for!)
Also, plucking does involve some mild pain, but not as much as waxing or other methods which involve masses of hair removed at once.

Shaving

Shaving is the removal of hair by use of a razor, to sever the hair close to the skin but above the root.
There are many types of razors available, both electric and non-electric. Most razors have one blade, others have several with the idea of a closer, quicker shave. Some razors incorporate features such as a moisturizing strip, pivoting head, and even battery-powered vibration.
The face, legs, chest, and pubic region are the most common areas to shave.

SHAVING - HOW TO DO IT
Take a hot shower, or wet skin with warm water. Apply lubrication such as soap or shaving cream if desired. For legs, shave against the grain using light, gentle strokes to avoid razor burn. For more sensitive areas like the face, or if you are prone to razor burn, shave with the grain. Rinse razor frequently to avoid clogging with hair.
Afterwords a moisturizing product or aftershave may be applied. Moisturizer is helpful to avoid drying skin on legs, and aftershave can contain moisturizer to sooth irritated skin and razor burn, and alcohol to avoid infected hair follicles.

SHAVING VERSUS OTHER METHODS
Shaving is quick, can be done in the privacy of your own home, and is relatively painless and inexpensive. However shaving is short-term. Depending on the individual you may find yourself needing to shave anywhere from weekly to daily.
Stubble is another drawback not found in methods where the hair is removed by the root, such as plucking and waxing. Also, you may experience painful razor burn or ingrown hairs with shaving. However, razor burn may be managed by shaving gently and slowly and using a clean, sharp blade, and ingrown hairs may be avoided by waiting longer in between shaves. Both will benefit if you avoid scratching and further irritating them.
